Established in 2001, the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale in Korea is one of the largest ceramic events in the world, representing contemporary artists from over 70 countries. 

Artists are invited to take part in the competition which calls for works that mirror modern trends and point to the future of contemporary ceramics and redefine its essence by exploring spirit, values, forms and technique. 

The winner will receive a cash prize of KRW 50,000,000 (approx $43,000 US) and will be invited to have a solo exhibition during the 2019 Biennale.

'Paul Ryan’s gutsy paintings pack a punch that has won him many fans over the years. Ryan is not afraid to experiment with subject matter. A 13-time Archibald finalist, he regularly collaborates with other artists and also musicians, and often chooses to deal with confronting topics. He is happy with the choices he has made in his art career, and the apparent ease of life in his comfortable seaside studio belies the “collateral damage” that painting can bring to a life devoted to art.'

Edwina Corlette Gallery is delighted to announce the representation of Paul Ryan.

Born in Auckland in 1964, Paul Ryan has had regular solo exhibitions since 1988. Based in Thirroul on the New South Wales coast, Ryan's work looks at the Australian landscape and history, in particular as it relates to the area near where he lives.  

A finalist in the Archibald Prize 13 times, he has also been a finalist in the Wynne Prize three times and the Sulman Prize four times. He won the 2010 Paddington Art Prize for landscape painting and the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize in 2012. 

Paul Ryan's first exhibition at Edwina Corlette Gallery will be in 2017.

Museums & Galleries of New South Wales is delighted to announce five residencies have been awarded through the Artist or Curator Residency Program for 2017. Generously supported by the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, each residency of $11,250 will provide artists and curators the space and time to immerse themselves in a unique place, community or collection within a regional gallery, boosting their creative process.

Bega Valley Regional Gallery, New South Wales

In partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Services, Bega Valley Regional Gallery will host contemporary painter Julian Meagher on a month long residency within the south east NSW region. Over the month long residency Julian will deliver three workshops and one masterclass.

Miranda Skoczek is renowned for her engaging, energetic works and her spectacular use of colour. A fixture on the Australian art scene, her work is instantly recognisable for its layers of intuitive colour, pattern and motifs. Iconic Australian label Country Road thought her work was perfect for a collaboration with charity RedKite. Miranda has designed two tote bags and a t-shirt, with all proceeds from each sale going towards providing essential support to children and their families who are facing cancer.

Earlier this year the Consulate launched the Monash Room Exhibition Program, giving Australian artists the opportunity to exhibit their work at the New York premises. From a broad range of applicants, four exceptional artists were selected for the program; John Aslanidis, Sara Morawetz, Jeremy Edmiston and Jemila MacEwan. Arts and culture has a vital role to play in strengthening Australia’s reputation as a creative and sophisticated nation. Through this program of work the Consulate aims to promote collaboration between Australian artists and international partners, while also generating awareness for our talented featured artists. John Aslanidis is the first artist to exhibit at the Consulate through this program.  A respected Australian artist, John's works are a celebration of his relentless aesthetic optimism. The vibrant colours and concentric patterns give the impression of a pulse, as if each painting has a very loud heartbeat.   

Belem Lett is a finalist in the inaugural Birmingham Prize. The overall winner will receive a $20,000 cash prize generously donated by Elaine Bermingham. 

The Elaine Bermingham National Watercolour Prize in Landscape Painting is a unique triennial art prize which aims to celebrate excellence and innovation in the watercolour medium. This non-acquisitive prize is open to all Australian artists and selected finalists will be exhibited in the Webb Gallery, located within Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art at South Bank, Brisbane. All finalist artworks will be available for sale to the public.

The first Central China International Ceramics Biennale will be held at the Henan Museum. Curated by art historian Wendy Gers the biennale will exhibit work by 50 Chinese and international artists.

Vipoo Srivilasa is one of six artists to be commissioned to create a site-specific work for the Biennale. In November he will take a residency at the Ceramic Art Institute of Henan University to create six large figurines for the exhibition.

Like bursts from a camera shutter, Abbey McCulloch’s new series Performance at Tweed Regional Gallery captures not only the most consciously posed and poised bodies, but those moments in between that reveal the out-takes, where gestures belie the vivacious, confident woman caught only a millisecond before.

Somehow, we all know one of these fabulous creatures. She oozes with self-possession, acuity and style. She has a kind of élan, or je ne sais quoi that can be neither bought or photoshopped. With a prolonged and desiring gaze we realise that she is not one, but many women. She is composite and contemporary taste. She is a construction created by you and I, and them ‘out there’.

In this moment, McCulloch’s aim comes into sharp relief, problematising the very act of looking. She asks simply, “What do you want from her?” And in asking this question, McCulloch characterises the expectations we place on others and ourselves in the performance of everyday life.  Dr Laini Burton, 2016
