A fresh and wild reflection on country life comes to view in Myles Young’s new work. Conceived and painted in a bright and airy studio in Byron Bay in early 2020, themes of relaxation, exploration, isolation and amusement encompass the work. Enabled by many cups of tea and a lot of dancing, these energetic paintings are typical of the artists playful and bold approach to making sense of what’s in front of him. We are spoiled with invitations to engage with the abstract forms that inhabit the landscape.

"In late March of this year I opted to move home to Byron and paint full time. I spent my days sitting in the sun and staring at the trees in silence. I wanted to paint this feeling of taking refuge and having a base to explore from. I had a lot of energy pent up inside me as I was used to a fast Sydney lifestyle, so I enjoyed being bold and loose with my designing the works during isolation. The Fauvists ever inspire me, so I wanted to paint landscapes in oil that were my own based on how I felt." - Myles Young

Myles Young graduated from the National Art School with Honours in 2014. He was a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship 2018 and 2019 and the Waverley Art Prize in 2019 and 2020. He will be exhibiting new work at Sydney Contemporary Presents (online) in October 2020 as one of five artists invited by the National Art School.

Myles Young 'Country Invitations'

Myles Young’s landscapes are purposefully artificial. Drawn directly from his imagination, they are fusions of reality and fantasy that synthesise distinct views from various standpoints; contemplations on the elements you can’t see - air, vibrations, sensations; and anecdotes from his childhood spent between the ocean and lush rainforest of northern New South Wales.

Beginning as digital sketches that allow him to distort perspective and respond quickly as ideas form, Young’s works are layered with mistakes, redirects and spontaneous mark making. Often he will leave a composition, returning weeks later to resolve it. Once ready, they are recast on the canvas in layers of acrylic and oil. Colour is a central concern, as is the feeling of play and imagination that emerges as he experiments with texture and form.

The resultant landscapes are universal spaces that challenge our sense of the natural and unnatural, and imbue plant life with human emotionality and a sense of something just beyond our perception.

Myles Young is an alum of the National Art School, Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) in 2014. Winner of the 2020 Macquarie Emerging Art Prize, he is a finalist of multiple awards including the Paddington Art Prize (2021), the Waverley Art Prize (2020, 2019), the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship (2019, 2018), the Footscray Art Prize (2019), the Albany Art Prize (2018), and the Downstairs 45 Gallery Emerging Artist Award (2017). In 2018 he was commended in the Young Artist Prize at the Royal Art Society NSW. His work is held in the Macquarie Group collection, and has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia.

MYLES YOUNG FINALIST IN THE PADDINGTON ART PRIZE

Congratulations to Myles Young who is a finalist in the 2021 Paddington Art Prize with his work 'Water Secrets'.

The Paddington Art Prize is a $30,000 National acquisitive prize, awarded annually for a painting inspired by the Australian landscape. Established in 2004 by Arts Patron, Marlene Antico OAM, this National prize takes its place among the country’s most lucrative and highly coveted painting prizes.

The prize encourages the interpretation of the landscape as a significant contemporary genre, its long tradition in Australian painting as a key contributor to our national ethos, and is a positive initiative in private patronage of the arts in Australia.

Marlene Antico OAM, created the Prize in order to assist with the monetary difficulties that often impede artists from showcasing their works. As an art student, gallery owner and volunteer guide at the AGNSW for over 10 years, she has underscored her commitment to supporting contemporary Australian artists, aware, of the

Myles Young awarded one of eight Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prizes

Eight emerging visual artists have been awarded the 2020 Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize including Myles Young for his work 'Shortcut to Widefield' 2020.

Now in its ninth year, the Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize recognises a new generation of Australian visual artists. Artists in the early stage of their careers were invited to enter up to five original works that reflect the Macquarie Group Collection’s theme The Land and its Psyche.

The winners are:

  • Katie Banakh, Victoria
  • Victoria Hempstead, NSW
  • Mahala Hill, ACT
  • Emma Itzstein, Victoria
  • George Kennedy, Tasmania
  • Katie Stewart, NSW
  • Joanne Wheeler, Central Australia
  • Myles Young, NSW

The Macquarie Group Collection has supported emerging Australian visual artists for over 30 years. With the theme The Land and its Psyche, the Collection comprises more than 850 works by artists who, at the time their work was acquired, were in the early stages of their career. Acquisitions are made by a committee of volunteer Macquarie staff and a curatorial consultant.

Works in the Macquarie Group Collection are exhibited in more than 40 Macquarie Group offices worldwide and periodically loaned to public institutions.
