W I T H I N A N D B E L O W

The search to understand self and place continuously directs me to spaces in which human-centred narratives of progress abandon. Through gesture and colour I investigate the life that sustains us, whilst also considering geographies of the mind.

As my practice continues to explore the complexities of humanity’s desire to belong, I resituate myself in a studio where plein air works are transformed by imagination and distorted by the inaccuracies of memory. It is here that I can go within and below the surface; of landscape, mind and canvas. I question perspective, knowledge, and truth, but most importantly, I paint. A combination of gestural, bold, and sensitive marks, colour, and collage aims to communicate how we are all deeply inscribed in the world as equally strange and messy combinations of ambiguous matter.

Shifting between following the paint and pursuing a composition, I am seduced into a familiar yet peculiar place that speaks of the something that is beyond my understanding and comprehension. WITHIN AND BELOW explores the interconnecting worlds of trees, rocks, soil, human, and all else, articulated through the language of paint.

Emily Imeson, August 2021

Having spent the past few years as a perpetual nomad, passing through some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes, Emily Imeson can speak with authority on the therapeutic benefits of being engulfed by nature. For Imeson, it is fundamental to her wellbeing – living in a 4WD and working from a camp studio where canvases are routinely supported by tree branches instead of easels, provides calm and perspective amongst life’s dramas. It is a way of life that both balances the artist and reinforces her interest in celebrating and preserving the ancient connection between humanity and the land. A truly plein air painter, Imeson’s canvases depict the incredible natural phenomena she witnesses – dramatically transformed landscapes at dusk, the mass movement of wildlife through habitats, arid rockscapes bathed in sunlight, a jet-black sky filled with stars.

To date Imeson’s practice has been as much about the experience of continuous wanderlust as it has the act of painting however newly introduced restrictions to travel and outdoor activities have forced a rethink on how she connects with her environment. Now living a more sedentary lifestyle in Northern New South Wales, she is working from memory, finding new ways to describe the places she has been and learning to embrace change as readily as the landscape around her always has.

Emily Imeson is an alumnus of Southern Cross University, completing her Bachelor of Visual Arts in 2016. Winner of the Macquarie Group Emerging Art Prize in 2019, she was supported by a Young Regional Arts Scholarship through ARTS New South Wales from 2016-18. In 2020 she was a recipient of the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship.

EMILY IMESON, A RECIPIENT OF THE 2020 BRETT WHITELEY ART SCHOLARSHIP

For the first time in its 22 year history, the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship has been awarded to five artists, one of whom is Emily Imeson.

Congratulations Charlie Ingemar Harding (Victoria), Emily Grace Imeson (NSW), Dan Kyle (NSW), Lily Platts (NSW) and Georgia Spain (Tasmania).

Art Gallery of New South Wales Director, Michael Brand, said that in one of the most challenging years the arts community has ever experienced he’s delighted that the Scholarship could be awarded, albeit in a different format.

‘That the Scholarship this year is shared between five artists instead of a single artist speaks to the moment we’re in, where we all need to work together and find new ways of thinking for the benefit of our community.

‘The Scholarship remains a prestigious, national painting award and I welcome all five recipients to the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship alumni who have, like Brett Whiteley before them, had their worlds open up as a result of being offered this opportunity to spend time creating work in a new location,’ Brand said.
