ARTEFACT

I love to collect and record what I find when I am out and about on my ramblings. I have an addiction to bushwalking and a need to understand and name the natural environment I am moving through.

I am not a botanical artist. I do not try to represent what I see with botanical accuracy. When describing a fish one has caught or a snake seen on a pathway we tend to magnify the creature 10 times in the telling of the story. I’ll focus on the parts of the plant or bird which most interests me, I may create a new mutant banksia or I may assign new colourings to birds to emphasise a feature which delights me.

I love to look at the 1794 drawings of James Sowerby and the illustrations from the late 1800’s of Elizabeth Gould, very often these were not depicted with exactitude. There was no photographic record so they could tell a story. I chanced upon the drawing of a Ground Parrot by Sowerby from 1794 and even though I have never seen one of these in the wild, I can find photographs and videos. I love the exaggeration of the feather patterns in this drawing and the unlikely pose of the bird, so much so that I felt compelled to make it in three dimensions in ceramics.

The recordings, drawings and taxidermy of Joseph and Elizabeth Gould were created for museums, collected and displayed. I have used bell jars / cloches and museum jars to display my ceramic recordings, recordings of my imagination based on fact. I usually only make and record what I see and find on bush walks, but I have allowed myself to also make what I find while searching through libraries and books if that discovery is to me, completely wonderful. Jane Du Rand 'Artefact'

South-African born, Ipswich-based Jane du Rand uses her art practice to document and better understand the world around her, building three-dimensional landscapes that feature the native flora and fauna she encounters while bushwalking west of Brisbane. Having made note of everything she’s seen while hiking, she recreates these scenes using a combination of ceramic and mosaic techniques. Presented under glass cloches, they are reminiscent of the dioramas found in natural history museums – a contemporary sculptural version of the early natural history illustrations and specimen displays that existed in the Victorian era.

Originally trained as an architect, du Rand’s practice also extends to large-scale mosaic murals, with her intricate designs incorporated into the architecture of civic and private buildings around the world. Made by hand in her Brisbane studio before being shipped overseas and assembled on site, these installations allow du Rand to fully reflect the environment in which they’re situated – each mural densely populated with iconography unique to the area.

Having juggled these dual arms of her practice for over 20 years, du Rand is now gravitating towards more expansive sculptural works, drawing on her mural practice to create huge vessels and urns that measure over one and a half metres high, and feature imagery of the natural world in mosaic and ceramic relief.

An alumna of the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban, South Africa, Jane du Rand is internationally recognised for her large-scale ceramic mosaics commissioned for public buildings and private homes in Europe, the UK, the USA, South Africa and Australia. Awarded ‘Best of Show’ at the 2017 Ipswich Art Award, she was a finalist in the 2020 Queensland Regional Art Awards, the 2018 Ipswich Art Award, and the Mercedes Benz Award for South African Art Projects in Public Spaces in 2009. Her solo exhibition ‘Living in Ipswich’ will be presented at Ipswich Art Gallery in 2020.

JANE DU RAND AT IPSWICH ART GALLERY

LIVING IN IPSWICH

Solo Exhibition, Jane du Rand

Jane du Rand was the recipient of the 2019 Regional Arts Development Fund which supported her to develop a new body of work focused on the architecture and history of Ipswich, Queensland. These works aim to capture the essence of the homes that reflect the lives of the people living in Ipswich and to create a ceramic record of “living in Ipswich”.

"The architect in me finds the urban fabric of Ipswich to be beautiful and unique. The collection of Queenslander houses and their positions in the streetscapes around Ipswich are amazing and I cannot go about my daily commutes without constantly being fascinated by the houses that pass me by. There are really beautiful historical homes, but there are also so many wonderful “everyday” Queenslanders of varying age and condition lived in by local people, and it is these homes and their occupants, and the way people use and live in their houses that interest me the most."
