“In the sonic network series I use a set of mathematical intervals to compose the paintings which are relative to a symmetrical grid on each of the four canvases.

This drawing that I use as a reference point to compose my paintings, is akin to an algorithm or “musical score”. This allows me to improvise when composing the paintings and arbitrarily choose any of the eight points on each canvas to create complex compositions that are underpinned by a structured approach, which appear at first glance to be random.

The intention is to create imagery where there is no starting or finishing point, capturing a fragment of infinity. In this regard my work has a strong correlation with emergence theory where complex patterns emerge out of simple interactions.

This systematic and interdisciplinary approach has a strong correlation with music, mathematics and science. My work is not an illustration of sound but rather a visual expression to its physicality.”

John has exhibited throughout Australia for over 20 years. His work is currently represented by galleries in Australia, New York and Berlin, and he has received grants from the Australia Council, Arts Victoria, the NSW Ministry of the Arts and the Pollack Krasner Art Foundation (US). He has worked extensively in collaboration with composers to install his work with their music written in response to his paintings, to create a multi-sensory experience.

JOHN ASLANIDIS AT LONGCHAMP TOKYO

John Aslanidis has completed a major site-specific commission for Longchamp's Omotesando boutique in Tokyo's Harajuku precinct.

Taking one month to complete, the 84 sqm wall painting extends across three levels and is now open to the public.

This commission is in keeping with Aslanidis' elegant chromatic paintings which offer a vision firmly grounded in knowledge of physics, mathematics and music theory. Colour is liberated, and balanced by greys and blacks married to complementary opposites to create high contrast and compositionally resolved works.

To read more there is an interview with John Aslanidis and i-D Vice Magazine Japan regarding the Longchamp project here.

JOHN ASLANIDIS AT THE AUSTRALIAN CONSULATE IN NEW YORK

Earlier this year the Consulate launched the Monash Room Exhibition Program, giving Australian artists the opportunity to exhibit their work at the New York premises. From a broad range of applicants, four exceptional artists were selected for the program; John Aslanidis, Sara Morawetz, Jeremy Edmiston and Jemila MacEwan. Arts and culture has a vital role to play in strengthening Australia’s reputation as a creative and sophisticated nation. Through this program of work the Consulate aims to promote collaboration between Australian artists and international partners, while also generating awareness for our talented featured artists. John Aslanidis is the first artist to exhibit at the Consulate through this program.  A respected Australian artist, John's works are a celebration of his relentless aesthetic optimism. The vibrant colours and concentric patterns give the impression of a pulse, as if each painting has a very loud heartbeat.
