Louise Zhang’s work starts with the most basic unit of construction: the amorphous, inchoate ‘blob.’
This entity, defined by its infinite mutability, and pure, constructive potential, is central to Zhang’s work, as she manipulates ‘blobs’ to produce abstractions of the everyday, informed and shaped by painterly gestures.
Her candy-coloured paintings appeal to viewers both visually and tactually; their highly worked surfaces reveal the presence of paint as a material, rather than merely illusory, element.
Zhang’s paintings function as spaces through which viewers may contemplate meaning, her intentions explorative, rather than didactic. Although her works are resolved, their ‘blobs’ hover between form and formlessness, delighting in uncertainty.
