JASON WING

BIOGRAPHY & CV

Jason Wing’s artworks are signs of hope that express the power of positive thinking for regeneration.  The act of recycling, of rebirth through the addition of another layer of history, is an important starting point for this artist.  His work is not about denial, but about the possibility of rebirth.  It draws on his own negotiation of identity in the Australian cultural setting, combining elements from the rich traditions of his Aboriginal and Chinese heritages.

Wing has invented a personal iconography which he uses to stencil onto salvaged signs.  Using a predominantly red, yellow, black and white palette that pays homage to colours customarily used by each culture, and stencils produced by the Chinese paper-cut method, the artist layers his creations, often self-representations, onto the didactics of the old signs.

The vestiges of society’s rules and directives form a cultural and compositional background to his images.  Similarly, his use of stencilling, which invokes techniques of historical documentation used as much by the ancient masters of Aboriginal rock art as by today’s street art masters, reaches across time and culture.  Wing’s work, however, exceeds the sum of its parts: the visual prompts that emerge from between its layers point to the universal character of the human spirit, and add up to a bold conceptualization of hope for those who embrace its message.
