ERIN SMITH
BIOGRAPHY & CV

Artists have long been fascinated by the conceptual link between words, images and ideas, and Erin Smith’s work represents a contemporary foray into this territory. Smith uses words as her medium – literally – by creating pictures out of words and lettering digitally manipulated so that the assembled typography no longer describes an idea, but embodies it.

This approach speaks of a new way to understand cultural experience in a world where traditional divisions and certainties have become blurred. It undermines the illusion of self-containment of the art image, once the hallmark of modernism, and demonstrates the visual text as a site for an infinite number of readings.

Smith’s meticulous compositions intensify this process, drawing attention to the way in which we construct meaning. Her exquisite fusions of the mechanisms of life and death – whether body parts or weapons – oscillate between beauty and horror and confront us with the disturbing truth: it is only humans that have the power to transform signs into meanings.
