ARI ATHANS
BIOGRAPHY & CV
I have used geology as the starting point for this work.
I am interested in the beauty of science and in particular what comes out of the ground. I like to play with ideas about the value of these materials and the cost to our planet. My point is all materials should be valued. Everything should be recycled. Our resources are limited and mining them comes at a human cost.
The house and jewellery are motifs I use to show the emotional attachment we place on our stuff. Rocks and gems express stability and permanence. Yet gems can be lost and houses can be built on unstable rock foundations. Houses as crystal palaces and ostentatious jewels all question our emotional attachment to these things.
I spend a large part of the day working with materials, their physical and optical properties are all considered when creating a jewel. It is a challenge to express material concepts in a two dimensional format.
This is why I paint.
